JJ SLAYS THE DRAGONS

jj-hazan Everyone will remember JJ Hazan from the Dragon den TV series, where he pitched himself as a poker player who was gonna win big, unfortunately the dragons didnt want to back him.

However they may have been a little hasty in their refusal, as JJ took down the £300 GUKPT side event at Luton last weekend netting himself a very nice £6,000.

JJ will also be taking his seat in the end of the year Champion of Champions event, and if he can manage to take that down what a missed opportunity that would have been for the multi millionaires that make up the team of dragons.

A Goldenlady at Betfred Ladies Poker Tour

michelle This weekend saw the fifth leg of the Betfred Ladies Poker Tour. The Stockport 36 Casino was the hosting venue for this leg and saw 71 Ladies fight it out for the £2480 top prize and a seat in the end of tour Grand Final. As featured here Kim Jagger was on for the treble, unfortunately she hit the crossbar when her Ace King ran up against Ace Jack and Alison James sent her to the rails, when the flop came down with two Jacks on it.

And so it was to be that Stockport would see a new champion, the final table and chip counts here;

King Kev Rocks the Grosvenor.

kevb The first 727 at the Grosvenor Casino in Stoke on Trent was won by none other than our very own forum member Kev Bloor.

54 runners turned out for the event that had a pot of £1620 waiting for who ever made it through to the final table. 12k starting stack with a 30 minute blind structure and no anti meant this was going to be a good night of poker for everyone.

A steady start to the game, relatively tight all round and no casualties for the first hour. Bunny was unlucky running his trip 6s into a full house on the flop, the turn and river didnt help him, and his stack was crippled. A brave fight back was halted when he ran 8-9 hearts in late position into the big blind who found A-A , and bunny was gone.

Peskie went out in 31st place after being constantly drowned on the river ,plus getting bombarded by Rage everytime he saw the blind.

By 00.30 we were down to 21 players, 5 1/2 hours into the game and just under half the field remained. The chip counts at this time saw :-

Table 3, Dekka ( suck my fruit ) Litherland leading the table with 55,400 chips folled by Rage on 46,000 , and Dave Lines on 41,000.

Table 2, Mikhail Kierejewski 55,100 , Andy Rutter 51,000 , Norma Clay 42,000.

Table 1, Richard Boot 40,000 , Kev Bloor 29,000.

So it was tight for overall chip lead between Derek Litherland and Mikhail Kierejewski as just 300 chips separated them.

01.00 level 10 begins, an average stack of 31k blinds were 800-1600, i just had a chat with Kev Bloor who said that 2 hours ago he had 30k and he has been more or less card dead. With his stack at 29k though he still managed a smile as he was 2nd in chips on his table.

Action on table 3 as Rage raises 5k, everyone folds except Derek Litherland, who re-raises all in! Rage is bemused, he thinks for an eternity and then folds showing Q-Q , ” good fold” says Litherland who shows the table K-K. Wow, everyone gasps and cant believe what they just witnessed.

01.30 Mikhail takes out Irishman Ward, Ward pushed all in with A-9, only to see Mikhail table A-K . No help on the board for Ward and we are down to 2 tables .

Table 3 has Dave Johnson all in, a call from Rage for just over 20k see`s Johnson show K-Q, Rage shows A-K, a dead flop , Q on the turn and a blank on the river and Johnson doubles through to 42,300, Rage however is now down 16k.

WOW Table 1 has Richard Boot all in , Mikhail has re-raised all in , and Norma Clay has pushed also!! 3 WAY… Boot has QQ, Mikhail has KK, Clay has A-Q, this is a monster pot, i cant count the chips in the middle!!!

Norma Clay has just tripled her stack in an amazing stroke of luck that saw Boot get the boot from the table and Clay sitting pretty with 69k.

While all this was going on, Dave ( The Bear ) Palin has just been eliminated on the other table with 8-8 vs A-A from Dave Lines.

Chris (Ernie) Lowe was eliminated when he ran A-10 into A-A , its going mad!! Nothing happens for 1/2 an hour then it all happens at once.

Its half past 2, and we are down to 13 players Kev bloor is still hanging in there on 26k, but after a bit of nice table play increases to 40k in the space of 3 hands.

02.40 , Dave lines has just raised 12k, Dave Johnson re-raises all in from the big blind , the anguish on Lines face is plain to see, as he gingerly folds and Johnson shows QQ.

02.42 Mick Jagger all in on table 2 with A-Q, a call from Kev Bloor with A-K , the flop , 7-Q-8, turn 7, river 8! Jagger doubles through and Kev has got just 12k left and need oxygen. This is crackers, hand after hand the short stacks are doubling up when going in from behind.

Dave Lines has just lost a monster pot against the Rage , Lines had A-10 on an A high flop , while Rage had A-A,

Dave Taylor doubles up to 50k off Dave lines again, who has seen his 72k stack diminish down to a mere 5,200.

The very next hand sees Lines all in again, ( the wheels have really fallen off ) as Taylor calls and takes the remaning 5k from lines, and sadly ,after playing a really good game Lines goes out in 12th place.

ITS BUBBLE TIME!!!!

10-4-6-10-4 on the board and Bloor hits a full house, with the blinds and Baileys chips this puts Bloor on 90k, amazing how just 10 minutes ago he only had 12k !!!

Literally 2 minutes later Bloor pushes all in agian, this time Andy Rutter calls. Bloor A-Q , Rutter K-Q

A-A-9-4-6, Bloor has just smashed his table to pieces in a 15 minute poker polverising!!!

10 minute fag break for the 9 that are left, a quick coffee, and a chance to catch my breath.

I take a moment to chat to Dave Johnson who we dont see a great deal of really, and its no wonder, he travells from Northampton every saturday just to play the game at the Grosvenor in Stoke!! now thats dedication.

Straight away you can feel the tension on the table, and for a full spin the blinds are safely gathered in, UNTIL…….

Rage in seat 2 is on the big blind Bloor is on the small, everyone folds round to the small blind, Bloor who has amassed 148k in just over half an hour announces all in! Rage thinks for a moment “call”

4-10-A-J-7 , Bloor has just taken out the Rage and adds even more chips to his mini mountain.

Average stack is 72k at this point ,and it is 04.15. Paul Clegg is all in now with 7-7, Jagger calls with K-K , a king on the flop gives Jagger trips and a nice double up and puts Clegg on 4k. The very next hand we lose Clegg as he has less than the big blind , Taylor pairs his jack in the big blind and its curtains for Clegg.

One hand later Litherland is all in, ( this is insane) Johnson calls the all in, Kev Bloor re-raises all in. What??? 3 way again?

And Bloor smashes another one to the rail leaving 4 players and 3 of them need clean underwear.

Unreal, this guy is assasinating the whole final table, and sits behind a 436 stack , no, Mountain.

Shortly afterwards Clay announces all in with 8-8 , to which Mikhail calls this time with A-K,

A-K-4 -J-8, after flopping 2 pair and looking certain to knock out Clay, Mikhail see`s the 8 on the river that gives Clay trips and a double up to 58k.

Its all going on here ,

A chip check has Mikhail on 60k approx, Taylor on 90k , Clay 58k, and Bloor a staggering 450k !!!

The next victim came in the following hand and was Mikhail, who pushed all in on Bloors big blind with A-K, Bloor automatically calls with 5-3.

Bloor can hardly see his cards for his chips, Clay then pushes all in with 9-10, Bloor calls with K-Q spades ,

4-4-4 9-8 , eh? Bloor lost a hand? oh yes he did and doubles Clay up to 100k.

A bit of argy bargy early on between the 2 remaining players , they were like 2 lions trying to show who was the more dominant. First Taylor would raise 20k , then Bloor would re-raise and a battle of whits ensued.

It wasnt long however before Taylor pushed all in pre flop, Bloor instantly called .

4-9-9 - A-J, it was all over Bloor had just more or less demolished the final table with a show of amazing poker.

Take my hat off to the man who was 2nd though , a very worthy 2nd place and £350 in his pocket, but the winner and a very deserved one too and with £600 to add to his bank account is Mr Kev Bloor.

What a fantastic night, and it was announced at the end of the tournament that this event would feature in the cardroom schedule every month from now on, with £300 added prize money, and dealer dealt.

Many thanks to Matt the Monk, the TD for the night who helped me no-end when things got a bit tasty with 2 tables left, to all the dealers and valets for making this a thoroughly enjoyable event.

Doan Takes Down the Unibet Open In London

UKPI UNIBET LONDON OPEN Finnish player Thanh Doan bested a field of 266 at the Victoria Casino, London to take down the inaugural Unibet Open, London. Doan defeated Brit Arkady Kielman to win the trophy and the € 187,000 first placed prize money.

Thanh started the final table as chip leader with 706,500 in chips and never looked in any real danger, he eliminated the last three players to take a commanding chip lead into the heads-up battle with Kielman who can count himself unlucky as he was cruelly outdrawn on only the second hand of heads-up play.

Kielman made an excellent call of Thanh’s all-in move holding Q8 on a 8,6,4 board. Thanh tabled 65 for second pair and the gutshot and caught lighting in a bottle on the turn when another 6 peeled of to give him the lead and ultimately the trophy.

What happened at Dusk Till Dawn last night?

Dusktilldawn Poker I usually try and make my way to the £75 game at DTD on a Friday evening as its probably the best game in the country under or around the £100 mark.

However, I didn’t go so that I could have a rest for once in my busy life running my business. I took a look at the site today, to see if anyone that I knew had done well and to my complete astonishment, only 36 people entered the competition!

How did that happen?

There are usually (from memory) around 60-80 players for this game. I know its holiday season, but still, I expected the drop to be a few people – maybe 5-10 at the most.

Am I missing something or should I be worried about DTD and the Friday game. If it turns in to one of the £50 games that they hold on Thursdays and Saturdays, then it will probably mean I’m limited to monthly games from now on.

Full Moon at the WSOP 2009 (Day 7)

wsop-ukpi Just 27 poker players remain at the end of day 7 in the WSOP 2009, and American Darvin Moon has a full table of chips in front of him of over 20,000,000.

Gone home in 28th place, was the unlucky Joe Ward who managed to get all his chips in pre-flop with A-K, only for Jamie Robbins to call with A-Q. The flop of A-10-8 looked pretty good for Ward and even the 2 on the turn was helpful, but when the river card sailed down the felt and moored a Q ,Wards dream was over, and Robbins marched on. At least Ward has $253,941 to cushion the blow on the way home.

The UK`S last man standing in the tournament , is Londons James Akenhead, who with 8,615,000 chips sits in 11th place.

Short stack at the moment on 1,440,000 is Frenchman Francois Balmigero, while the top 5 chipstacks all belong to Americans which include in 4th place the poker legend that is Mr Phil Ivey.

British Poker Players in the WSOP (Day 6)

wsop-ukpi Day 5 saw the field shrink from 185 runners to 64, as you would expect a few names fell by the way side.

The first British contender to fall was actor Michael Greco, followed shortly by Adam Latimer, both picked up a respectable $36,626 for their troubles.

In 156th came Chris Bjorin and 143rd Ian Woodley, when the 116th player bust out their was a flurry of UK exits, 115th Chuck Clark, 114th Karl Mahrenholz, 113th Dwayne Stacey and 112th Sarne Lightman (not sure why he is listed as UK though). They all picked up $40,288. 89th place went to Jamie Brown for $57,991.

So, going into Day 6, we are now down to 64 players and 3 British gladiators are left in the arena; Western regular Jeff Duvall, Bristolian Adam York, and James Akenhead. All will be picking up no less than a measly $100,000.

However. it seems the man to watch out for in these later stages is the legend himself Mr Phil Ivey, who already has picked up 2 Bracelets this year. This year saw the first black American President, will we see the first black main event winner? I hope so – maybe it will knock the ego of another Phil down a peg?

British Poker Players in WSOP (day 5)

wsop-ukpi The real business end of the World Series of Poker now, and still just under 10% of the field are registered as from the United Kingdom, all are guaranteed at least $36k. 185 players still remain, with the last person to bust out last night being non other than the actor Lou Diamond Philips. Peter Eastgate, last years winner is answering critics by still being in with the shot at the end of day 5, but the UK man in form is undoubtedly James Akenhead, who is running so hot this year and in the top ten in the biggest tournament in the world. Channing still has Horses running, and it looks like Adam Latimer is holding his own and can still feature in the big bucks, surely Black Belt Poker have covered their costs and now in profit from their live venture? I still didn’t realise `Elky` was a UK citizen though?

Ian Woodley wins Bellagio Cup Festival $1500 event

Ian Woodley Even though all of the news at the moment around the web concerns the WSOP, there are plenty of other things to be reported upon concerning British players – on both sides of the pond.

My own favourite poker player, Ian Woodley had a good result this month with a win at the $1500 event at the Bellagio Cup Festival V on the 2nd of July.

Winning over $59,000 it is yet another payday for one of the good blokes on the poker scene. He then followed this up with a 14th place finish 2 days later, picking up just over $2k.

It just goes to show that it doesnt always have to be about the WSOP in the month of July in Vegas. I’m sure Ian picks his games better than most on the circuit and this month’s takings go some way to proving this.

A cracking start to the month of July for one of the nicest guys to play on the Stoke poker circuit. JT helped steer the ship to a well deserved 2nd place in the January Benefit Bash team game by captaining the now UKPI ALLSTARS, was also in Blackpool to cheer the lads on when we won the AWOP team event last year, and also for the APAT team event.

A great all rounder who will take a captains role, or team members role, well done sir we all hope for better things for you as the year progresses

DTD £300 Deepstack Poker July 2009

First off, let me say that I personally didn’t expect the field to go over 260, to my amazement 322 players decided to grace the beize. This is without doubt the best regular competition in the country, however there were a few things that could have harmed numbers. The Betfred Ladies tourny, the WSOP main event, Wimbledon, Stokes £100′er and the weather. Despite this the £80,000 guarantee was well surpassed, once again. This maybe due to the fact that the competition now starts at 2pm, making it less likely for the travellers to have to pay for a hotel, without being in the money ( Should have been done from day 1 IMO ). The 2 o’clock start also releases the cap so hopefully soon there will be 400+ playing this.

Early casualties included Lucy Rokach, Laurence Gosney, and Johnny Hewston falling at the first hurdle. Mickey Wernick, Des Jonas, Pete Singleton, Pippa Flanders and Zac Ford had a steady first day (but begs the question, why are they in the UK? They are all regular WSOP’ers, do the “old skool” think it’s too much of a crapshoot with all the internet qualifiers, has sponsorship dried up, has the recession hit poker?) Other Vegas regulars spotted at DTD include Frankie Knight, Pete “The Bandit” Evans and Craig Widman.

So after 12 gruelling 45 minute levels, and enough time for anyone in a 100 mile radius, to drive back home and still return refreshed, the comp got down to 56 players, of which 36 players would be lucky enough to make the dosh. One of theses gladiators, was none other than a shortstacked ukpokerinfo’er MrMacacan, who eventually nursed his stack into 33rd place for £450. By 9pm the final nine sat down to battle, and it looked like Jihad between new online and old skool live players, and the chip counts were as follows;

4th was Andrew Purser for £7000

3rd Tom Underwood for £10,000

Hitting the crossbar was Darren Hodson for £16,500

And the out right winner with no deals, and can now pay his student loan (and some) was Christopher Philips who steam rollered the final table and hit everything

UKPI’er wins at Dusk Till Dawn Poker Venue

Regular low-balling circuit player, James Welch, won recently at Nottingham’s Dusk Till Dawn in the Sunday £75 competition. Although recorded on the DTD website as placing 2nd to give bonus points to a DTD regular, James took the split-first prize of £1100 back to Stoke, ready to splash out on future poker game failures such as the £300 DTD weekend game on the 4th July.
