The International Club

September 16, 2008

Based at 55 East Road, London, a new poker club opens this Thursday, I use the term poker club, very losely as to get around the gaming laws now, poker cannot be the main reason for the club. However as the staff are mainly Gutshot employees and I believe (although not 100% positive) that some of the Gutshots owners are connected in some way, and the fact the Gutshot is now closed, that the other primary reasons for the club, i.e. Backgammon, Bridge, Chess etc are just a front, this is in fact the new Gutshot AFAICT . A gaming permit for a private club has apparently been granted and the schedule is as follows:

http://www.theintclub.com/schedule.php

Only time will tell the complete story, I just hope it is a bit straighter down the line than the Gutshot was, UKPI wishes them all the best

Poker Endurance Record

September 15, 2008

An attempt at breaking the longest session of live poker for charity is currently underway, Alfa AKA Dave Cain is at this very moment challenging the record at Lincoln University, details once completed. Details and Donations with a live feed can be seen at www.pokerplayingmarathon.com get donating to his chosen 2 charities!!!

Edit: Congratulations Dave, he broke the world record by a couple of hours!!! He decided not to go for the 100 hours after hallucinations.

To Everyone
THANK YOU

Just to clarify things, I decided to bring the attempt to an end at about 10.30 last night, so the record is well and truly broken but not by as far as I was aiming. However it’s still a world record at 74ish hours (I will confirm all the times when it has been officially counted up and agreed).

As usual I will be completely honest and up front about what happened, so I won’t hide the fact that my decision to bring it to an end was mainly based on health grounds. During Wednesday afternoon I had something of a mental breakdown, it was extremely scary for me and even worse for friends and family who witnessed it, I was fine one minute then all of a sudden I didn’t know where I was or what I was there for, people obviously explained what I was doing, but even so it was something I could not comprehend at all. I even had to be taught how to play poker-Literally everything from scratch. I complained that the blinds were not necessary and that there should be a flexible amount of community cards and that the game was too linear so should be played in a circle. Following that I felt like I was in a cage being taunted tortured and punished for a crime I didn’t commit. Kay and all my best friends were all there, all trying to help by saying and doing the right things but they were powerless. The medical staff who were present were obviously also very worried  wanted to call it off, but with the record so very near and with my forthright insistence to them that it should stop over my dead body they agreed to closely monitor me and my mental state. (my pulse actually slowed to its normal 75-80 bps to 55-60). Part Of me (the sane part) knew what I was doing but seemed powerless and as if i was looking in from the outside of me, the other part of me wanted to switch off and die. After a while with the help of many others I staged the situation I was in before the breakdown, same dealer, same opponent witnesses and seating position. I was instructed step by step what to do while playing including being to told to pick up the 2 cards to see how good they were, when I did I then wanted to know what was a good and bad card so spent 5 mins or so showing the cards to every one for their opinion…I honestly had no idea what-so-ever.

Slowly though the clogs in my brain started to slip back in to place and bit by bit i came back to a sane consciousness and eventually to most people present I appeared to be completely back to normal, however I wasn’t and I knew I wasn’t, I had just suppressed it to allow everyone to enjoy their build up to record being broken, the subsequent celebrations and mostly to ease their to ease their worries. When the record was broken I carried on as long as I felt safe in my own mind to do so. So with my priority being family and friends I decide to stop to the clear relief and celebrations of everyone who was there.

So anyway, there is a massive amount of information that needs to be compiled including witness statements, handover sheets, record log, match account details, video footage and even card by card hand details. When I have gone through the latter I will give you all the statistics (although I am slightly nervous about that lol). As promised I will also give all the detailed accounts of the funds raised for the charities.

Finally I want to say a massive massive thank you to everyone who got involved, especially John Casper Hussey who gave up all of his summer school holiday (from teaching) to design and build the site. Also (far to many to name in person) all the witnesses, stewards, dealers and support staff who worked around the clock prior and during the event-some of who event took annual leave to be able to help. The players who came and paid their money to play -none of which wanted anything in return even if they beat me, fantastic and very generous thank you.  I also want thank Dom and his fantastic staff at the Library bar, you are a legend mate. The Wednesday morning guys (you all know who you are) who sang joked and drank their encouragement when I was at my most tired and finally of course my lovely partner Kay who has done so much in every way to help but has also had to suffer the consequences of my stressful periods, thank you sweetheart.
Dave ‘Alfa’ Cain
World Record Holder

PS. There is a celebration party at the Library bar TONIGHT with many local bands playing, everyone is welcome to attend.

WOW JUST WOW!!!

Casino Red Huddersfield

September 13, 2008

New Casino and cardroom opening on the 22nd September. Reported on AWOP

We are looking at opening 22nd sept with my card room open at the same time but the full poker schedule will be launched on 6th Oct as it stands right now, so we can build publicity and market the schedule for max exposure.

The casino itself is stunning….Hudds old theater restored to glory. With 4 floors and a gorgeous, modern theme juxtaposed with the high ceilings and the 2 tier structure of the old venue, it has to be seen to be believed.

As for my poker room ——

It looks simply amazing. It’s downstairs completely cut off from everything else, with valet room yards away, 8 plasmas surround us and we have the best tables I’ve seen. Very cosy, very very lush!! Its already the favourite area for all the staff here because of the warm, modern decor and great atmosphere created by the low ceilings and intimacy.

Just got my chips through the other day too and no exaggeration they are simply gorgeous!! I have never seen such high quality, expensive playing chips in poker ANYWHERE! I can see them going walkies during comps everyday as people snatch them for souvenirs! the directors here have gone all-out to make this a special venue.

Those of you who have been to the G manchester and know my work, will know what to expect in terms of professional standards of running the room. Add that to a truly great looking room and the best equipment and we are looking at a premier poker venue…

I will post the schedule soon, but as a teaser it will be based on the winning formula we developed at the G, with something for everyone. Also we will be having a £50 rebuy on sunday nights - NO REG FEE AND FREE BUFFET! - Part of the perks of being an indie company, I can do things here that the corporates would baulk at!

oh and finally…there is the main stage in the 1st floor over-looking the entire venue….this will be our special final table area for big comps etc with the hope of an over-head cam to broadcast the action live on the casino’s many plasmas as the players look out onto one of the most spectacular venues around and the venue’s patrons look down from tiers.

Its going to be a very special casino and more importantly…poker room.

Hope to see you all there soon!

Overlays

September 11, 2008

Not so much as an article but a question….

This week I had news of a huge huge overlay on ipoker, was at the time $1.3mill for the $2.5mill guaranteed. I had no plans to play this, and it wasn’t that well advertised IMO. Do you tell potential players of the tournament, that would stump up the $1500 entry fee or just ignore it. The reason I ask is, that I told a forum about it and got chastised for doing so.  It’s no skin off my nose who plays or how many runners, as i wasn’t able to play it, but as poker information is what I use the net for, surely people should be informed of good value. As it happens they had an influx of players after my post was plaguerised on another forum and the overlay was minimal……….your thoughts? lol

European Ranking Events in Poker

September 9, 2008

As from the next 321 weekend at Dusk Till Dawn, the format will be

£100 Freezeout on the Friday @ 8pm 5000pts 30 min clock

£300 Freezeout on the Saturday (2 dayer) @ 8pm 10,000 pts 45 min clock

£200 Freezeout on the Sunday @ 4pm 7500 pts 30 min clock

£100 Scalp comp on the Sunday @ 8pm 5000pts 30 min clock

Now for the great news…….. Each of these will be European Ranking Events!! It is unprecedented that one club has 4 ranking poker competitions in one month on a regular schedule. This means that it is possible to be ranked as the best player in Europe just from playing in one place?? 48 yearly events to have a crack at!! This will also probably mean that the fields and the quality of the fields may increase. EPT’s and WSOPE events will undoubtedly have more points attached, although the frequency of the 321 events may make it pheasable that the winner doesnt have to move from the Midlands ;)

DTD GOLF DAY

September 8, 2008

As most of you know Dusk till Dawn is closed now on Mondays and Tuesdays, however ….

On Tuesday September 30th, Dusk Till Dawn will be having their Golf day, and as any good golf day goes, they will need to play poker and have a few drinks later ;) Therefore the club will open at 7pm for a unique Live Head Hunters Challenge starting at 8pm. The competition will be a £25 freezeout and their will be bounties of £25 on a few heads. Waheed Ashraf, Richard Berridge, Peter Conduit, Simon Lee and Simon Trumper will be the pro’s to hunt.

If anyone requires further details about the golf they need to email Maggie Morris at mmorris@dtdpoker.com.

Punters Lounge Poker

September 4, 2008

Punter’s Lounge is a forum for all sorts of tips and betting advice, more often than not very good advice. It is also a live friendly forum, which means regular meet ups. Occasionally you will see members appearing on AT THE RACES along with race sponsorships. Usually these kind of race days involve copeous amounts of alcohol and a game of poker afterwards. This usually is a freeroll, played for forum bragging rights, with a few spot prizes. The atmosphere at these games is absolutely top notch!!

This Sunday coming they will be participating in such a game, at Bearwood, we have held 5 previous poker nights for Punter’s Lounge and they have all been a great success. Beer, Karaoke, Play Your Cards Right, Entertainment and poker, makes sure all members that participate go home with smiles on their faces. I cannot recommend enough. But, if you think that you would like something more serious, Punter’s Lounge will be holding their PLWSOP at Dusk Till Dawn later on this month, which will have two events (No Limit Hold’em and Pot Limit Omaha) and there are still a few spaces free, get ones ass over to their forum ASAP

See you all there!!!

Dublin IS THE place

September 3, 2008

to play poker apparently! Yes Poker Europa winners for 2008, best poker destination is the capital of the Emerald Isle. Last Year it was London, but Dublin beat Vienna, Amsterdam, Paris and Barcelona. Although the host of the WSOPE and EPT came in second place.

Although the EPT in Dublin has been cancelled for next year, the tournament on everyones lips is the Irish Open, which is reputed to be the best, friendliest tournament in the world. It is ironic that most of the poker clubs and casinos are illegal, it is still holding some very prestigious tournaments……. seems the cops do their jobs properly and fight crime instead.

As members of UKpokerlife can testify, it is right up there for the craic at all levels.

Apat Champion

September 2, 2008

This week saw the APAT championship at The Grosvenor Victoria (The Vic) Among the events were Pot Limit Omaha, Razz, Hold’em, and Stud.

The over winner was Neil Jenkins who fought off 200 other amatuer players to win, not just £3,500 and the title, but an $8,000 package to the GUKPT Final, other winners of different games include David Howard who won the PL Omaha, Mike Bodman who won the Razz comp (the first in a UK Casino, we believe) and Owen Ranking who won the Stud Championship.

I have been a big critic of the Amatuer Poker Association and Tour, as the association IMO has not lived up to its potential, however there is no doubt the tour is fantastic value, with added prizes etc. And I believe the atmosphere is second only to a Virgin Festival.

Devilfish on TV?

September 1, 2008

ITV Wales is due to air a series of programs later this week called  ”How to Become a Poker Millionaire”.  The idea behind it, is that he takes 4 losing poker players and trains them for a month. Each week a player will be eliminated and the last man standing gets a seat in the WSOP 2009. A plethora of high profile poker players will be involved in the production, and Devilfish supposedly releases some of his secrets (can’t wait lol). If you are unfortunate to live outside the Welsh Borders, then it should be coming to standard ITV soon, but if you can’t wait, I am sure you will be able to see it on Pokertube.

Happy Dayz ???
