GUKPT Coventry

August 31, 2009

gukptWell after an impromptu “Summer Series” was arranged at the eleventh hour for a new GUKPT event to be held at the new G casino at the Ricoh stadium, the aftermath was IMO a poor turnout.

It is clear that this venue will feature heavily on the GUKP Tour in the coming seasons, as the venue itself is probably the best in the country, however poor advertising and a rush to host a GUKPT event did them no favours. When you add into the equation that Blackpool had nearly 200 runners for their £100 comp, PSOP was being played down south and DTD was hosting the WCOAP which had 317 for the main event, then it was pretty certain that the field would be hurt for this.

This particular Series was a relatively low buy-in affair by G standards, and the turnout was low in all three events (the £200 NLHE 2 dayer, the £150 1 dayer, and the £300 main event).

The main event was won by 33 yr old Frenchman Thomas Besnier, but the star of the show for me was a regular on poker forums Mark “Realdeal” Deacon, who was playing in his first GUKPT main event. 84 players turned out for the £330 game (The event was capped at 150 runners).

Bank Holidays at DTD

August 31, 2009

isisWell not DTD as such, every Bank Holiday on Lenton Industrial Park ( home of UK’s Poker Mecca Dusk Till Dawn) there is action. Not just poker action either, the club next door ISIS has a kind of tradition, Bank Holiday Rythmn and Blues night. This is a known trouble spot on Bank Holidays, so much so that they don’t open their own car park and taxi’s refuse to pick anyone up from there, leaving huge crowds outside stranded and drunk at kicking out time. Nottingham City Council should IMO address this situation as soon as possible. Maybe this weekend will make them look at this hotspot a bit more seriously as two people lay seriously injured in hospital after being stabbed. The stabbings happened at 3.50am Monday morning, the same time as the majority of people are leaving Dusk till Dawn.

Please don’t get me wrong, there was no overspill into DTD’s car park and all patrons of DTD were safe, but it is daunting to know you are leaving a club with a sizable amount in your pocket, and there are a large amount of groups hanging around not too far away. Actually exiting the car park is the biggest risk as nightclubbers block the road, whilst they are having their minor skirmishes or friendly chats, although the police presence was huge.

The APAT championships had been held at DTD all weekend, and the event was a resounding success. I just hope that those players who had never been before think it is the norm! It definitely is not!

Kimpossible takes the Grosvenor 7-2-7

August 30, 2009

KimJagger1Kim Jagger took the honours last night as the Grosvenor Casino in Stoke-On-Trent hosted their popular 7-2-7 event for a second time.

A field of just 32 runners turned out for the event , largely due to the fact that it is bank holiday weekend , coupled with the fact that the apat event was being held over at DTD, and Coventry were holding the last of the summer series events.

Never the less a cracking night of poker was had by everyone who attended.

Some players had even travelled up the M5-M6 from Bristol to play the event, others came from Northampton , and even a few locals turned up.

With £300 added by the Casino we eventually had a pot of over £1200, and such was the structure , it ensured that everyone who hit the final table of 9 would be paid .

TD for the night was Karl Elliot who ran the cardroom brilliantly and made sure that everything went without a hitch.

The complimentary buffet was excellent ,and a credit to the staff.

We got underway at 7pm and it wasnt long before we had chips flying into the pot as we saw A-A vs K-K, Gary Strang on the the recieving end of that one, we saw straights Vs flushes , and the best one in the early stages was Mick Jagger holding a bigger full house than Richard Boot.

Fast and furious was the pace , theses kind of structures are usually a marathon rather than a sprint, but the Harvey brothers Chris and Matt didnt read the script and were firing on all cylinders early on taking down some big pots , although losing a few too.

We had played for almost  8 hrs before we finally reached the final table , which seated the remaining 9 players. First casualty was the ever solid Sue Pellington who ran her pocket 10s into James Hardwick who called with K-J spades . The flop saw 2 spades come down and a further spade on the river gave the hand to Hardwick and Sue a place on the rail. Next we saw Craig Bickertons exit and after having nursed his short stack from early doors amazed everyone by even being on the final table, a cracking display of how to nurse your chips.

James Hardwick departed in 7th closely followed by Bristols Mark Marchantin 6th . Rob ( Smokey ) Bailey in 5th.

The final 4 were husband and wife Mick and Kim Jagger , ( Deadly ) Daz Sutton, and the guy who had been chip leader for almost 3 hrs Richie Salt.

A really good fight for the top prizes saw Mick Jagger running his pocket 10s into Richie`s Qs and we lose Mick in 4th , Deadly ran his favourite hand of A-J into Richie`s pocket 8s, and the 8 s held up.

And finally we were heads up,

Kim Jagger was pulling the chips back to an even stack with Salt, and i am sure  Richie was trying more strokes than the Oxford boat crew, but after 15 minutes of pushing and pulling they decided to chop the prize money that was left, a steady £350 each and as Kim had a few more chips than Richie , she was declared he eventual winner.

So our congratulations  go out once again to Kim and Richie on a fantastic display of poker.

A personal thank you from me to:- little Chris who gave me a hand in the early stages of the comp cheers mate, to Karl the TD for all his support throughout the night, Kelly the valet and Mr Mike for the endless beverages,

And to Justin and Tony for allowing us in there to do our live feed, a great night guys, thank you.

Peskie

WCOOP Kicks Off This Week

August 30, 2009

UKPI WCOOOPThursday the 3rd of September will be clearly marked in every online poker players diaries, why is this? Maybe it’s to ensure that the day is properly celebrated as the very day in 1967 that Swedish motorists stopped driving on the left side of the road and began driving on the right side by the poker community?

Or maybe poker players want to ensure the day is suitably celebrated for the fact that in 1935 Sir Malcolm Campbell became the first person to drive an automobile over 300 miles an hour. He reached 304.331 MPH on the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah.

Or maybe they just want to make sure they get some of the $40,000,000 in guaranteed prize money that will be awarded over the coming seventeen days of non stop poker action on the world’s largest poker site, PokerStars.Com during the ‘World Championships of Online Poker 2009!’

Gala Grinds Axe

August 29, 2009

gacNot 2 years ago, Gala, in a bid to save money axed all it’s Assistant Managers including 3 of my friends as a cost cutting exercise. Once more it seems that, that particular role in a casino or bingo club is jinxed.

On Wednesday, all staff were having meetings up and down the country and it was clear that something wasn’t right, 5 clubs had already closed down this year and rumours were rife. The day after the meetings Memos went up in every Gala

As you are aware, the industry has, over the past two years, faced an unprecedented level of decline due to the impact of the smoking ban and punitive legislative change. As a result the company has reviewed every aspect of its business and a key part of this is the way in which our clubs are structured to meet the challenge

Assistant and Deputy Managers, Team Leaders and Departmental Heads all on the “High Risk” of losing jobs, once again and then they will restructure. I understand there is a recession, and that new Government taxes and the smoking ban are affecting business, but why are the axing the most loyal staff? Shouldn’t it be last in, first out?

Gala were the first to fasttrack managers in the gaming industry, mostly all from the bingo operations to manage casinos ……. we said then it was a mistake …….nowts changed.

So another few of my ex workmates hit the dole queue

Bad Credit?

August 28, 2009

ukashWant to play Pokerstars, but not able to use a debit or credit card? No problem now!!
Ukash announced yesterday that it will now be used as a method of uploading online payments on the Stars Network. Ukash isn’t just used for players with bad credit, it can be used to protect anonymity for one.The main advantage however is that it is a lot more secure, as now you don’t have to input all your financial details online.

There are other methods used for players with bad credit, the most popular at the moment are prepaid debit cards, i.e. Mastercard Gold plus, Tuxedo etc. But here is a tip. These cards charge you to deposit and withdraw, but if you have an O2 mobile account (contract or pay as you go) registered in your name you have another option. Last week O2 announced all their customers are entitled to use their prepay service (which is Visa btw), the big advantage of this, is that it doesn’t charge you to deposit or withdraw. Even better than that, if you deposit £50 in consecutive months, O2 will deposit another £5 into your account!

Circus Casino new start time for the £100 freeze-out

August 28, 2009

circusThe very popular £100 texas holdem poker monthly freeze-out at the Circus Casino in Stoke On Trent has announced a brand new start time.

It has been decided to bring the event forward by 2 hrs to the new time of 4pm.

This will allow a further 2 hrs of play to the event that sees people from all over the country flocking to the venue for their monthly show case.

The management are keen to announce that the £1500 is still being added to the prize fund that usually attracts between 150 and 220 runners every month.

There was talk that the casino would move the event to the second sunday of the month, as it conflicts with other events around the country , i can however confirm that this will NOT be taking place and things will remain as they are for the forseeable future.

There is a whisper that in the new year they will be changing the buy in and the added prize money too. It has been suggested that the buy in will change to £150 , and the added prize money will increase to £2000, as soon as they confirm this with us , we will let you know.

Durrr Challenge Kick-start’s With an Antonius Fight Back

August 27, 2009

Durr vs AntoniusAfter nearly two months of waiting and an overwhelming feeling of disappointment at the complete absence of progress in the much vaunted Durrr challenge, the last four days has seen a flurry of activity between the two players on Full Tilt poker.

The last two sessions have seen Antonius fight back with the last match totalling 1,241 hand and seeing Patrik taking $415,311.50 from Dwan in a few hours and giving himself an overall challenge lead of $76,104.00.

It will be scant consolation but Dwan did win the biggest pot of the session, Antonius and Dwan managed to get five bets in pre-flop, Dwan holding 9S,7S,5h,3h and Antonius Ah,Ac,Kh,2d. the flop came Qc,9h,2c and the remaining money found its way in the middle, Dwan spiked a 3 on the turn and the board bricked out on the river and Dwan wins a $229,000 win a raggy two pair!

Keep an eye out today as the two where discussing playing another session today.

Current Challenge Totals

Tom ‘Durrrr’ Dwan: -($81,112.50)

Exercising a Bit of Pot Control

August 27, 2009

UKPI STOCK 8Pot control is a bit of a weakness of mine, having started poker life as a limit cash game player and a later on focusing primarily on no limit tournament play its something I have only recently needed to understand better as I have gravitated towards no limit cash games as my main poker fix.

Pot control is primarily the concern of cash games players but the requirement will occasionally crop up in deep stacked tournaments. Situations that require a greater degree of pot control tend to be limited to scenarios where both players are at least 50BB deep.

I have on occasion got a little confused as to why I’m trying to control the pot, it is after all a difficult line to walk between exercising pot control and protecting a hand properly. So to reiterate we want to exercise pot control when we have a marginal hand that we want to get to showdown cheaply.

I’m going to present two situations to define the difference between exercising pot control and protecting your hand,

Six max cash game, we make a standard raise pre-flop in position and are facing two solid opponents, all players 50BB+ deep, flop is Q,J,3 rainbow and you hold J,10 and its checked to you, this is a prefect time to exercise pot control. Our hand meets our requirement of being weak but with showdown value, plus our hand could improve on the turn with the addition of straight potential. The key thing is if we bet and get raised we are going to have to fold what might be the best hand.

Six max cash game, we make the standard raise pre-flop in position and face two opponents on a flop of J,8,7, two spades, all players 50BB+ deep and you hold AJ of diamonds and it is checked to you. Our hand in this spot is strong enough that it warrants a bet but is also somewhat vulnerable; betting about 2/3 pot better defines our opponent’s hands better and still leaves us room to fold if a big scare card turns.

Pot control is still a weakness of mine, but taking the time to define what action is required in each situation is helping me to improve this aspect of my game.

Late Night Poker

August 27, 2009

latenight_pokerAnyone remember the original series one? I will give you a clue Dave “Devilfish” Ulliott won it, runner up was Pete “The Bandit” Evans and third was Dave “The Ambassador” Welch. It was the first televised series of poker and re-launched the popularity of poker in the UK. In fact, I would go as far to say that it changed the face of live poker in the UK it was THAT influencial! In those days there was little banter, and most anguish was a muttering about the dealer as the loser walked away from the table ……. oh have times changed.

The latest series is now being filmed in Cardiff, with new sponsors FullTilt. This post is a bit of spoiler, so if you want to know who won heat 1 and 2 read no further.

Heat 1 was on Monday and the winner was Tony G, so he makes it to the final on Friday, the reason why I have stated this is for 2 reasons. 1) he will be at the final, and 2) he commentated on what will be the most talked about heat in LNP History.

Heat 2 featured, Ram Vaswani, Marc Goodwin, Dave Colclough, Sammy George and bitter rivals Andrew Feldman and Luke Schwartz aka Full_Flush1 (If any of you don’t know the history between these players, then what planet are you from?) Each player putting their $10k where their mouth was.
Just a snippet of rivalry

Schwartz made his mark on the show, shocking HTV Wales staff as he ripped into Feldman, verbally attacking him in front of the camera. This particular show ended up with the 2 rivals heads up with Schwartz having a 6-1 chip lead, and eventually ripping Feldman a new anus. It is a must see and you can see it all from September 8th on Channel 4. I just hope this doesn’t change the face of poker once again, as it is already fast becoming a gobshites hobby.

Just to see Tony G handle the arrogant Schwartz makes this my most anticipated televised final.

Party Poker Progresses

August 26, 2009

wpt_large_sliderV2It is clear that the UEIGA may be relaxed very soon, and this can clearly be seen by the increased activity of the advertising of PartyPoker, which used to be the main player in online gaming. Recently they have applied for the acquisition of the World Poker Tour, and this is expected to be completed in the next 3 months. The next big event that PartyPoker will be running takes place between 11th – 15th October.

The fifth Partypoker.com World Open will take place at the prestigious Palm Beach Casino in Mayfair. They have tripled the starting stacks for the $10,000 entry televised event. Each of the heats will start 8 handed, with the final being a seven man affair.

48 players will do battle across the baize with names already confirmed such as;
Mike Sexton
Daniel Negreanu
Johnny Chan
Tom Dwan
Luke Schwartz
James Akenhead
Jennifer Tilly
Phil Laak
Neil Channing
Liam Flood
Andy Black
Roberto Romanello
Steve Sung
JC Tran
Ian Frazer
and many more including the defending title holder Marty Smyth.

This will be held in association with Matchroom Sports and as such Jesse May will be commentating on all the action that will be screened on Channel 5 in November

Poker Heroes – Johnny Moss

August 26, 2009

johnny-mossJohnny Moss (born in Marshall, Texas on May 14th 1907 – Died December 16th 1995) grew up in Odessa, and learned his trade there as a young boy. He was introduced to the game by a school riddled with cheats and was taught how to cheat there (In a bizarre twist this is the state that Benny Binion was head of the Firm). He used this information wisely and at the age of 17 he was hired by a local Saloon to make sure the game was straight. After doing this for 2 years, he used his time watching the game to learn the strategy of poker, then decided to embark on his long career as a rounder, travelling the country looking for a game.

There are many myths and Legends surrounding the life and times of Moss. Three of the most famous stories include the time when he shot a cheat from behind a wall, who was using a peephole to spy on cards. Asked in an interview many years later if he had ever killed a man, he responded ” Well I shot a man, but don’t know whether he lived or died”.

There was also the time, when Moss was backed by some gangsters to play high stakes golf (to the tune of $250k) On the 16th Hole he was 2 shots behind, the gangsters were contemplating killing Moss’s opponent rather than paying him. Miraculously Moss birdied the last 2 holes and pulled it back. At this stage Moss’s opponent turned to him and said “You sir are the luckiest man alive” to which Johnny replied, “No sir, you are”.

The most famous story, strangely is the most vague. There is no doubt that Moss played a long winded Heads -up cash game with Nick “The Greek” Dandalos, which lasted over 3 months. What there is doubt over however, is the year it took place and the amount of money they played for. Some reports say 1949 – 1951 others have the prize money from $2million to $4million. The game was set up apparently by Benny Binion and he apparently bankrolled Johnny Moss, this was the first game that had any public interest as crowds gathered outside the entrance of the Horseshoe Casino to watch them play. After a number of months of daily play, Dandolos supposedly uttered the words after running out of funds “Mr. Moss, I have to let you go.”

Moss was also there at the beginnings of the WSOP in 1970 he was voted the best player in the world, by the other 6 players :) However his WSOP history looks like this:

1970 World Series of Poker Championship n/a
1971 $5,000 No Limit Hold’em World Championship $30,000
1971 Limit Ace to 5 Draw $10,000
1974 $10,000 No Limit Hold’em World Championship $160,000
1975 $1,000 Seven Card Stud $44,000
1976 $500 Seven Card Stud $13,000
1979 $5,000 Seven Card Stud $48,000
1981 $1,000 Seven Card Stud Hi-Lo $33,500
1988 $1,500 Ace to Five Draw $116,400

The Grand Ole Man of poker was the first charter member of Poker’s Hall of Fame in 1979 and is indeed worthy of being a Poker Legend.

Poker Heroes – “Amarillo Slim” Preston

August 25, 2009

PokerPages PhotoThomas Austin Preston junior was born on new years eve 1928, in Amarillo, Texas. He has undoubtedly influenced poker of the Modern Times, and is one of the most famous names associated with poker since the WSOP began. This is mainly due to his WSOP win of the main event in 1972, and his many TV appearances in films and chat shows. He was also very well known for his preposterous prop bets.

Slim’s childhood and lifelong friend was Benny Binion, and Slim spent his rounders years alongside Doyle Brunson and Sailor Roberts travelling from game to game, until the three of them landed in Vegas.

In 1980 he hosted the Second Annual Poker Classic and it was then renamed to Amarillo Slims Super Bowl of Poker and ran as the 2nd most prestigious poker tournament in the world until 1991.

Amarillo Slim also holds four WSOP bracelets
World Series of Poker bracelets
Year Entry Tournament Prize (US$)
1972 $10,000 NL Hold’em World Championship $60,000
1974 $1,000 No Limit Hold’em $11,100
1985 $5,000 Pot Limit Omaha $85,000
1990 $5,000 Pot Limit Omaha $142,000

I was going to write quite a lot about Amarillo Slim, as he was one of my idols for a long while, however in 2003 he was indicted on 3 charges of indecency on a 12 year old member of his family. He made a plea bargain and pled no contest on reduced charges of assault and recieved a $4k fine and a 2 years suspended sentence.

A film has been a long time coming about his life history called “Amarillo Slim” strangely enough and was due out this year, if you can’t wait to hear about how he got his Emerald Buttons, Ostrich shoes, snake skin hat etc and would like to hear about his tales on the road ……… read his autobiography.
