Hand Ranking According to Phil Hellmuth.
Many of us are unsure on how to rate a hand in live poker, indeed if there is a raise/re-reaise what do we do?
According to Phil Hellmuth the best way of doing this is by numbering each card , for example a 2 is worth 2 points , a ten is woth 10 and so on, jack 11 queen 12, Ace 13.
He says that he never plays a hand unless its a 20 plus meaning J-Q is 23. Hower if your cards are suited then add 2 points to each card, so now lets say 9-10 of hearts is now woth 23 instead of the normal 19 if they were not suited. Also what is worth noting is that your pocket pairs are worth double the points ( pre flop) so 7-7 is worth 28 points.
This can help in many ways if you are unsure about how to play certain hands, ie 10-j off etc.
One other thing he mentions in his books on strategy is that these rules apply when there are 10 players at your table , and as the numbers go down on the table, the actual points that each card is worth goes up 1point for each player that leaves the table .
Try this theory out the next time you are in a live game and see if it helps to improve your game.
