Quicker tournaments?
As casinos try to entice more people into playing poker, I’m surprised that we don’t see more and more ‘crapshoot’ or early starting tournaments around to try and entice the more recreational poker player.
The reason I say this is that I love to play poker at the casino but due to my job, family, stress levels, blah, blah blah, then I really can’t be going out at 8pm then rolling in at 5am and expect to keep my clients happy after just three hours sleep. I was intending to go out and play tonight but as always, when I start to think sensibly I realise that I just can’t do it.
I appreciate that to really enjoy poker you need to have a decent structure in order to play the game as it should be, and I’m all for most games to be targeted in this way. I wouldn’t want poker to become ‘dumbed down’ and turned into just another pit game but there seems to be a booming market in turbo tournaments online and so I’m just surprised we don’t see it more in the casinos.
Provided that the game is properly advertised as a ’speed freezeout’ as is often the case on the odd occasion that they are run, you know what you’re letting yourself in for. Yes you’ll probably be in fold or shove mode after four levels but sometimes, that can add to the excitement.Take this example; rather than playing one 40 man tournament that finishes at 4am, play two 20 man games that finish at midnight. I know which I’d prefer on a weeknight.
I don’t think that this is the future or anything groundbreaking whatsoever. I appreciate the staffing implications and overheads to the casino but I’m simply saying this:
The general culture of the English public is to go out around 19.30-20.00 and go home around midnight. In my opinion, if there were a few more poker games that fitted around these hours, on specific nights of the week, then attendances would improve. Yes, the regulars would moan, and rightly so, it’s not proper poker. What it is though, is better than spending a night in with the Mrs as I have done tonight because I’ve got to be up ealry in the morning!!
