Sex Pistols at the WSOP
Imagine the scene, you have just won $630, 000 and a World Series of Poker bracelet, all the games stop whilst you take the podium and the players pay homage. Jeffery Pollack calls you up to collect your new jewellry, you are presented with the item you have been dreaming of for 20 years. 700 people stand up for your national anthem and this happens…
Now are you pissed? Do you find it funny? Do you give a shit? Are you patriotic or does patriotism not come into poker?
Behind the scenes, a few Brits had requested this for Kabbaj and the Commisioner obliged (did he know the difference:) ), after the initial opening line Kabbaj seemed to think it funny, but as it went on he looked more and more uncomfortable. Jon Shoreman asked Kabbaj if he was offended by it, and apparantly (according to Shoreman) the majority of the Brits were not to chuffed.
It is true, that if we messed with the American national anthem, we would probably get nuked, and some say that the Americans probably thought this was our anthem anyway :s
A complaint was made after this ceremony, and the apology and the correct anthem was played the day after, ironically Mr Kabbaj didn’t attend this ceremony as he was either mentally preparing for the $50k HORSE or couldn’t be arsed, which makes a mockery of the complaint in the first place. I am sure if John Kalmar was presented with this song at a bracelet ceremony, he would be using the stage as a mosh pit. Horses for courses, but with $630k in my sky, they could have played Rick Astley for me.
