Thank you for the Poker
Thank you for the Poker
I know it’s not going to be a popular opinion, but I fucking hate Abba. (I also hate the Beatles and Oasis as I hate music that I deem to ‘sing a long’). Please read the rest of this article, even if you’re a Swedish Mop Top with a camel jacket as it’s only my opinion; I’m entitled to it and hopefully if you are upset the article can only get better from hereon in!
So anyway, much as I hate Abba, I still can’t help but smile when I drunkenly stand at the edge of the dance floor at weddings and the DJ, decides to play thank you for the music. Keep your ear out for it next time around, it’s usually played somewhere between Come on Eileen and Papa don’t preach.
The reason I smile is not because I like the song, it’s because whenever I hear it, for some reason, in the same way that Abba are saying thank you to the music fro what it has given them, I turn this into my own little moment of taking time to think about how many things in my life that I have to be thankful for. When I’m really drunk I can almost bring myself to tears.
So WTF does this have to do with poker? Very little to be honest. The point is that I’d like anyone who reads this to have a think about how much this game of ours has given to them. Next time you get rivered on a two outer don’t worry about, it means not one jot in the grand scheme things, about as much as a stubbed toe will mean to you when you’re stood at the pearly gates.
I started playing poker online mostly to waste a little bit of time on my lunch break. From there, the game has spiraled into something which has given me days out that I will treasure for ever. A weekly evening out that I enjoy as much as any drunken binge I’ve ever been on, but most importantly, the honour of meeting a handful of people who I admire, respect, and am thankful for being able to call friends. This is worth more than any cash pot could ever be worth, so to those people, thank you for the music .
