The Virgin Phil Hellmuth

dtdepoentranceI arrived at Dusk Till Dawn on Tuesday about 1.15pm to find two blokes with suits and bowler hats, 6 young ladies dressed in St Georges Cross dresses and a red carpet. Yep Phil Hellmuth is expected sometime today! Traditionally Hellmuth is a couple of levels late to make his entrance for all to see and I expected this day would be no different, especially as I know the night before there was a media event where Doyle and Hellmuth played poker with the Queen and Tony Blair (look-a-likes) which went on till the early hours.

I was told to supervise eight tables on the right of the club, which disappointed me slightly as Hellmuth and Brunson were the opposite side, although I had a great field to keep my eyes on including, in no particular order; Annette Obrestad, Praz Bansi, Andy Bradshaw, Joe Beavers, Ben Roberts, Marc Goodwin, Ross Boatman, Des Jonas, Surinder Sunar, Ian Frazer, Liz Boree, Dave Ulliott, Sam Trickett and Kevin O’Connell to name a few. Early doors I saw a remarkable hand with Kevin O’connell, James Roberts (Ben Roberts son I believe) and mateyboy. Raise and reraise call pre, flop came 10, 6, 5 O’connell raised, Roberts Reraised, mateyboy passes O’connell pushed and a call, on their backs. O’connell held a pair of tens, Roberts held a pair of sixes, and mateyboy allegedly passed a pair of fives!! Turn was a 6 to give Roberts Quads and pretty much felted O’connell bar 800 chips, 90 minutes later O’Connell had over 15k!!

Obrestad was knocked out early, but what was amusing was an identity problem, for some reason she kept on calling Praz ….. Ram, and exclaimed in her exit interview that Ram Vaswani was playing well, which tickled me :)

Just before the first Level had finished, Phil Hellmuth had snuck in (NO BRAVADO)!! but he only lasted 45 minutes, his AK found a pair of queens and the flop helped no one. He did his exit interview and then fucked off down to London for a Full Tilt Cash game, personally I think he was on Tilt because Devilfish got the second stint on the feature table after Doyle Brunson. :) But for any spectators or players wanting to see him, if they blinked they would have missed him (although he is a very hard to miss). OK he fulfilled his obligation to Raketherake.com by attending the media event, playing the event and doing his interview …. but 1 hour? I didn’t even get the table signed that I was hoping to auction for charity!!

As expected Andy Bradshaw was his verbal self (but it seemed there was some underlying piss taking from Praz, Sam and Annette) which seemed to be his downfall, as the younger players seem to be on a completely different wavelength to the older generation and the gap is widening monthly, leaving the old guard in the dust btw. Sonny Solomon made a reraise all-in to Andy Bradshaws pre flop raise and then for some reason exposed Ace Deuce of spades? Andy jumped on this and called instantly holding Ace Jack off, a deuce hit the flop and nothing else of significance, Andy headed out.

Around the fourth or fifth level Brunson got knocked out, did his exit interview and went to the VIP room, I overheard one of his roadies in a panic to get him some soup because he didn’t feel well (tbh he didn’t look too hot either) I hope he recovers soon, and builds up some energy for the WSOPE, but again that was the last I saw of him.

After he exited the atmosphere (although still good) went a bit flat, not too long after that I had to get off home due to a family bereavement and I also missed day 2 but followed it online. Day 3 will start later today, all the info can be found here

Can an Englishman win the English Open? Hopefully John Eames can do it (nap of the day) as he had been playing the best poker IMO although local boy Jim Moult also looks strong!!
