Underhanded Betfair Rumours
Sunday saw a titanic online overlay at Betfair Poker, it was a $500 Satellite with 10 packages worth $20,000 up for grabs. As usual the online community got to hear about it, many people decided the value was just too much and bought in direct. With 5 minutes left there was still only 197 runners registered for this so still over $100,000 overlay. Then the funky stuff started to happen, within 20 seconds the list had jumped to 308 runners!
All of these seemed to be Danish players, and rather than being entered randomly as they registered, the entries came up in alphabetical order?!?
Rumours were buzzing about something fishy happening and the chat boxes were full of Danish chat (I believe many complaints were made about the lack of English language in the chatbox)
An online site did some digging, and apparently a Betfair pro Peter Jepsen went on a Danish website and gave away 100 seats for anyone who signed up with him on Betfair.
Using a guaranteed tournament with overlay to sign up new players and this way reduce the overlay is unheard in the poker industry. The situation will create a lot of bad will to Betfair Poker from the regular players who qualified and paid their way in to this tournament.
Reducing the overlay value by approximately 50% for the “real money players” by giving away a lot of free promotion seats will certainly generate a stream of angry emails to Betfair poker during the night and in the morning when more players discover the news.
Leaving status as is will create an enormous heat against the poker product and some of Betfair Pokers most loyal players will continuously ask for fair and rightful explanations.
Betfair needs to do something about this now as this will have such a detrimental effect on any online site running satellites or guaranteed tournies, it is effectively deception and needs to be nipped in the bud!
Not only that but the soft play and the complaints about the foreign language in the chat needs to be addressed and quickly!
