Another thing that bothers me about the type of combatants that you meet in your standard £10 donkament are the ridiculously tight players. Now, I’m not knocking tight play in general. I would even go to say that at my local alcohol fuelled donkament, then tight play might even be optimal strategy but if you’re going out to play poker I don’t see how it can be enjoyable.
If, you’re a relatively new player and you’re a little embarrassed and unsure about playing live then fine. If it’s the first level of the WSOP and you want to soak it in, then fine. If you’ve just dropped a silent but deadly and you’re praying to God that no-one notices then fine, but if you do it week, after week after week, in the hope of squeezing into the pay off spots for three times your buy in, I just don’t understand it.
I play every week, TO ENJOY IT. I love mixing up my play in big pots with decent players. I don’t just bluff and play aggresivley (some would say I do), but I play lots of pots, I play in and out of position, I try reading people, I have a laugh and chat about rimming, reach rounds, and other standard topics of poker conversation. I basically try to enjoy all the facets of a game of poker.
Contrary to this, there are the same faces week in, week out, who sit there quietly, fold, fold, fold, raise then everyone else folds, and so on until they shove for two big blinds and get knocked out by 9-4 off suit three spots from the bubble. I don’t see where the fun in this is? Playing poker is about PLAYING POKER, going to a local cheap game, with little at stake and playing no poker, is like going to MacDonalds and having one of those ridiculous salads.
This is not a suggestion that aggressive poker is cool, or that tight players are wimps, but why waste valuable time in your life, sitting at a table pushing cards back to the dealer? Go on try re-raising 6-8 suited in the cut-off, it’s fun I promise!!
